Little something?
Ever been so busy you forget to be in a hurry? Yeah, that's me. This Lawn Party has me all tired, trying to pull together so much stuff in such a short amount of time. And that's my fault, because I insisted it be held in two weeks. D.J., one of my favorite people, is 82 years old, and his sweet hearted self built and set up our stage for the concert by himself yesterday and today in the 80 degree weather. It's done - steps and all. Just like that. Thank you, D.J. My only regret is not having my camera with me to take a sweet picture of him setting out on the plywood, nailing down another sheet. If you're interested in sponsoring/advertising/promoting your business or group, please let me know before Wednesday. Just click on that Lawn Party link up there, and it'll give you some more information.
In the garden:
The Roma Tomatoes are planted up to their tops, the Lemon Cucumbers are cozy in their row, the Sunflowers are standing tall, the Cucuzzis are almost tall enough to reach the trellis, and the zucchinis are leafing out rather well. My change this year is that I'm taking Laurie's advice on permaculture, and I'm using newspapers and straw to naturally sustain my garden. I did buy some Miracle Gro Organic Compost, since I had none of my own, and haven't bothered getting the manure from my sister. I mixed it with my natural soil while I was planting, and the plants loved it. Now the problem is keeping the pesky deer from walking all over it. The earthworms are everywhere. YAY Earthworms!
In the greenhouse:
My cherry tomatoes and Romaine lettuce that Ann gave me are doing really well. My Mesclun salad mix is standing up tall (that was a close one), and my Mandy peas have roots as long as my arm, and they are only a few days old. I have some red cabbage, and Mortgage Lifters, and Cherokee Purples sprouting, too. My herbs are picking up well, with the chives, sage, basil, cilantro, and savory growing like weeds.
In the flower gardens:
The azaleas are almost gone, but the Irises are making their Mother's Day debut. The Pineys are coming on, too, with the ants helping them along as quickly as they can. Most of you will know them by the name Peonies, but my family has always called them Pineys, since they're yankees and all. The Walnut trees are almost leafed out, and little peaches are plumping, too.
The bees:
Are doing phenomenally well. The bumblebees aren't competing, since they are occupied with the Muscadines and Scuppernongs. My girls are out fetching Iris dust and such, and are carrying home some awesome colors on their jackets. Busy bees, I tell ya.
The news:
Hasn't been on in my house in ages. I totally missed the elections. Had no idea there was a primary this week. I did, however, get to the National Day of Prayer ceremony today in Rural Hall, and ran into my 6th grade teacher. I had hoped not to ever see her again, but it was obviously not in the Lord's will. I prayed about how I was going to avoid her in the most Christian like manner, and thankfully, God has mercy and let me scoot without acknowledging her. Seriously, though, the ceremony was great, and Steve Hill Insurance provided a light lunch, which hit the spot at noon time. We had a good showing from our church, and the unity of prayer and song was touching. I teared up a few times, I'll admit.
I AM CAFFEINE FREE.
I AM TOTALLY NOT KIDDING.
I do think it's ironic that my freeness just happened to coincide with the end of Cheerwine's promotional Crave Factor. Hmph.
After a week, I finally had to break down and have a soda, but not because I was backsliding - just because it was my only option, and I had been parched for about 4 hours. I've bought Capri Suns in bulk to keep that from happening again. I didn't have any headaches since I weaned off for about 2 weeks, but Bobby, being a hard-headed male, is trying to go cold turkey, so he has a jackhammer going off between his temples. Sad. I love the 'I-told-you-so's.
Our vacation time is set - I'm leaving here on June 4th for a vacation that we haven't planned yet. Ideas?
I've got to work on the NROG brochure, Lee's site, and Ann's site this week - oh wait. Tonight is Thursday. I guess that will have to wait until next Monday or Tuesday now. Poo. There just isn't enough time in the day. Speaking of which, it is time for sleep, and away I go. Night!

The BEST thing about the newspapers is the earthworms! You can't turn up a handful of dirt in my garden without finding at least one now. That is not so in the community garden. People have tilled those rows to death. I took some earthworms out there.
